Sr. Product Design Manager · 2023

Overview

We had a hypothesis, a small team, and six months to validate it. I led design from the earliest concept sketches through to a shipped product that found its audience faster than anyone expected.

There was no existing product to reference and no established user base to learn from. We were building for a segment we understood only through secondary research and a handful of early interviews. The challenge was making good decisions quickly without overbuilding.

How it came together

01

Early concept and framing

We spent the first three weeks in low-fidelity. Lots of whiteboard sessions, lots of discarded ideas. The goal was to get to a clear problem statement and a product hypothesis we could test before writing any code.

02

Prototype and validate

We built a clickable prototype in Figma and put it in front of 20 people in our target segment. Half of them tried to use it as if it were real. That was a good sign. We also learned three things we had completely wrong.

03

Iterative delivery

We shipped in two-week cycles, with a designer embedded in each sprint. I ran weekly design reviews and kept a running list of what we were deferring and why, so nothing got lost.

04

Launch and growth

We launched with a focused feature set and a clear onboarding flow. Word of mouth did a lot of the work. By month six we had 50k users and a backlog full of things they were asking for.

The result
50k users in 6 months

Organic growth driven largely by word of mouth. Retention at 30 days was 62%, well above our initial benchmark of 40%.
